About Me
Who's Behind Ways to Manage Stress?
I'm Jane Berkowitz, creator of Ways-to-Manage-Stress. Thank you for stopping by my website and welcome! I'd like to tell you a little bit about me. I reside in beautiful Sussex County, NJ with my husband, George. I am mother of Doug, Lisa, and Missy, as well as grandmother to Ryan, Gavin and Alexa. I teach piano, have a home based business and am the administrative assistant to my husband, a building contractor.
I was blessed to be brought up in the small town of Sandusky, Ohio in the 50's, where life for me and my family was easy going and stress free. So it was quite a culture shock for this midwest girl when I moved to my husband's stomping grounds in the suburbs of New Jersey in the 70's. The pressure to rush and compete and produce now all seemed strange to me then. Only when I look back today can I see the effects that stress had on me and my family.
My goal at this website is to share with you what I've researched about stress. I hope to help people understand the role stress plays in their lives. I offer help and resources for people dealing with stress and stress-related health issues, as well as provide strategies in managing that stress. Several experiences have led to my interest in stress management.I developed an interest in nutrition and health from a college nutrition course. Since then I've been searching for ways to build health in my family, myself and others through nutrition, exercise, and yoga.
I was privileged to sing for a number years with a women's barbershop group, and I noticed that when I went home at night how my cares were left behind and my spirits were lifted. I also noticed, being one of the "younger" members of the group, the energy and aliveness in the other women, most who were retired and past retirement age. I was told "singing keeps you young". I wondered why. I've been practicing yoga for several years and notice a difference in myself. I was curious about how it helps health, as well as why tai chi improves health.
4 years ago I jump-started what I thought was a decent diet by adding a nutritional supplement. It made a huge improvement in my stress level. I was amazed that nutrition could make that much difference in a my state of mind and ability to deal with stress. What was the connection? How does my prayer life and study of the Bible help me better handle stress and maintain sanity when things around me seem insane?
I came to see an important connection in the state of our health and stress. I now see that stress affects greatly our health and well being, as well as our longevity. Not so much the stress itself - but the way we perceive and manage that stress, our attitude toward it and the things we do to combat it. I learned 75% to 90% of doctor visits are about health issues that are stress-related. The effects of stress on our bodies brings on many illnesses. Stress aggravates whatever is weak in our particular make-up.
I believe if you can implement healthy ways to manage the stress in your life, you can improve your over all health and even increase your life span. I hope that in this website you are able to gain a better understanding of how stress works and that you will discover stress relief techniques that are helpful to you. Stop back often and see what's new!
